Bin standards

What goes in. What stays out.

Somebody will open this kit. It should feel like a gift, not a leftover.

Goes in the bin

New and sealed
  • Travel toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Bar soap, shampoo, deodorant
  • Combs, brushes, washcloths
  • Tissues, lip balm, hand sanitizer
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • New socks, new underwear still in the pack
  • Sealed school supplies and backpacks
  • Factory sealed diapers, wipes, bottles

Stays out

Not in a kit
  • Anything used, opened or tested at home
  • Hotel samples someone already touched
  • Expired food, drinks or anything past its date
  • Homemade or perishable food
  • Worn clothing and used shoes
  • Medication of any kind
  • Damaged or leaking bottles
  • Anything that is not fit to give a friend

Brought the wrong thing? Take it home.

Three rules we do not bend

This is what makes a kit worth handing to somebody.

  • 01 / The rule

    New and unopened. No exceptions.

A kit goes to somebody who has gone without. It should not be where a half used bottle of shampoo ends up.

  • 02 / The check

    Every kit is checked twice.

One volunteer packs it. A second checks and seals it. That is why opened items cannot go in.

  • 03 / The books

    Given, never sold.

Kits are free to the partner and free to the person opening one. Online gifts run through The Hack Foundation, a 501(c)(3), which makes them tax deductible. Items from a bin come straight to our team.

Good to know

Before you drop off

Where are local charity drop off locations in OC?

All of them are on the live map at ik.mapji.com, with hours and directions, so you can check before you drive over.

What can I put in a collection bin?

New, unopened hygiene items, sealed school supplies, long shelf life emergency basics and factory sealed infant care items. If it is opened or used, it cannot go in a kit.

What happens to what I drop off?

Volunteers check it, sort it by kit type and pack it with other donated items. A community partner then hands the finished kits to people they already serve, usually within the same month.

What if a bin is already full when I get there?

Tell us the site name and we will schedule a pick-up. Please do not leave bags on the ground, since they get wet and cannot be used.

Every full bin is a stack of kits waiting to happen.

Drop something off on your way by, or host a bin where you already are.
